Stormy, wet start to August

The first weekend of August was very wet and stormy across southern Ontario.

Environment Canada said Sarnia received a total of nearly 60 millimetres of rain, over two inches, Sunday and Civic Holiday Monday.

A total of 33.5 millimetres was recorded from 2 a.m. Monday until Tuesday at 2 a.m., and 21.6 millimetres fell from Sunday at 2 a.m. until Monday at 2 a.m.

Another four tornadoes were spawned in thunderstorms over the weekend.

In the Kingston-Ottawa area, a tornado rated as a high-end EF0 with winds up to 130 kilometres per hour struck the community of Camden East Sunday afternoon. A tornado at the low end of the EF0 scale occurred in Oxford Hills and there was an EF1-rated twister with winds up to 150 kilometres per hour in Kinmount in the Kawartha area Sunday.

A weak tornado was reported Monday near Mitchell with associated tree damage.

The incidents are all under investigation in collaboration with the Northern Tornadoes Project.

Sarnia-Lambton was under a tornado watch and a thunderstorm warning Monday but no damage has been reported in the area.
