Bluewater Health has made the list of the world's best hospitals for the second year in a row.
The Sarnia hospital is ranked in Canada's top 50 at 38 in a global market research and consumer survey published by Newsweek.
Chief of Communications Julia Oosterman said the Sarnia site moved up from its 2019 ranking.
"We made just the cutoff, we were number 50 in Canada of all of the hospitals that they had reviewed, which was thrilling," said Oosterman. "So then this year, we kind of had an inkling that they might be coming to us again, so we really were surprised and delighted with this, moving up 12 points is exciting."
She said while the ranking criteria remains a bit of a mystery, the hospital has made significant progress on a couple of key initiatives in the past 18 months.
"One of them is the amount of time it takes when you come into the hospital and you are waiting for an inpatient bed, if your physician has decided to admit you. We've changed the metric on that significantly and that's a big hospital measure. It's really about expediency and efficacy around the hospital -- moving from within the hospital -- we're trying to speed things up so people have less time waiting and more time, frankly, in their bed."
Victoria Hospital within the London Health Sciences Centre ranked 35th, and the University Health Network's Toronto General site was ranked the top hospital in Canada.
