A Camlachie man has been charged after a Sarnia police officer was nearly hit by a vehicle while riding his motorcycle on his way home from work.
The incident happened at around 7 p.m. on Saturday when a vehicle raced through a red light at Christina Street and Maxwell Street.
Police said a cyclist was also nearly hit as the vehicle continued southbound toward London Road.
The off-duty officer followed the vehicle which failed to stop at two additional stop signs, squealing its tires and fishtailing.
The officer pulled alongside the vehicle when it had to stop for traffic in the area of George Street and Russell Street, and identified himself. The driver then tried to grab the officer's badge out of his hand.
The off-duty officer was able to arrest the driver at the scene.
An on-duty officer responded to transport the driver to police headquarters where he registered over 2.5 times the legal limit.
As a result, a 21-year-old man from Camlachie is charged with impaired driving. His driver's licence was also automatically suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.
