Sarnia police deal with large gatherings, Canada Day youth parties

Sarnia police responded to large gatherings and youth parties at the beaches at Canatara and Mike Weir parks on Canada Day.

In most cases, police said they educated the crowds on social distancing guidelines and several teenagers were cautioned for underage alcohol possession. Officers dumped a large amount of alcohol and issued a few tickets.

Police said they've noticed a significant decrease in calls to The Cove at the west end of Canatara Park since taking a targeted enforcement approach. They intend to implement a similar zero-tolerance strategy at Mike Weir beach in the near future.

Sarnia police responded to 97 calls for service on Wednesday, July 1.

There were nine liquor-related offences, seven disturb the peace calls, eight welfare checks, and eight domestic and family disputes.

They also issued 10 tickets for various infractions including open liquor, underage drinking, trespassing and traffic violations.
