Severe thunderstorms possible Tuesday

Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms are possible in Sarnia-Lambton Tuesday in advance of a strong cold front.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the region just before 11 a.m.

The weather agency expects storms to develop late in the afternoon or evening with the main threats being wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour and two-centimetre hail.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, and heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
