Police issue rental scam warning

Sarnia police say they're not aware of any local victims, but they're warning the public about a scam that targets residents looking to rent a house or apartment.

Typically, the scammer will communicate online and falsely claim to have a residence available with a very attractive rent.

The scammer will ask for first and last months’ rent to be deposited into a bank account, at which point keys to the residence will be forwarded but no keys ever show up.

Police remind the public to always do research when renting a place or any transaction of that nature.

Take the time to see the residence and meet the individual renting it.
