The first significant off-lake snow of the season for parts of Lambton County was expected Wednesday.
Environment Canada had snow squall warnings in effect for areas including north and east Lambton, Huron-Perth, London-Middlesex, Grey-Bruce, Elgin, Oxford-Brant and Barrie-Orillia.
Strong northwesterly winds pushing cold Arctic air across Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will create intense bands of heavy snow and blowing snow Wednesday afternoon and night.
Visibility could be significantly reduced at times with snowfall amounts up to 20 centimetres (eight inches) in some areas.
Meteorologist Peter Kimbell said the good news is, the event should be fairly short-lived.
"It's going to be mostly this afternoon, this evening and ending overnight, but nevertheless 15 to 20 centimetres of snow are possible locally, with stiff northwesterly winds and blowing snow," said Kimbell. "So not good driving conditions along the shores of Lake Huron."
Motorists are advised to adjust their travel plans accordingly.
