SGH Demo Behind Schedule

Complete demolition of the former Sarnia General Hospital site is taking a bit longer than expected.

GFIVE Inc. partner Mark Lumley says they had originally hoped to have all of the buildings down by August, but demolition doesn't always go as planned.

"We're still finishing up with the abatement process, we're in that 90 percent complete area," he says.

Lumley says the north and east wings are the only structures still standing.

"The upper levels of those are finished. They're doing some mechanical demolition on the inside, clearing stuff out on some of the upper floors, and they're still remediating areas in the basement," says Lumley.

He expected work on the east wing to continue for another week or so before a demolition permit is sought.

Lumley says once it's finished, the north wing should be ready to come down as well.

The group has a multi-faceted vision for the area bounded by Mitton St., Bright St., Mackenzie St. N, and Essex St.

Components include residential, commercial medical, general or community office, and possible construction of a new two-storey withdrawal management centre as proposed by Bluewater Health.
