Unplanned Boiler Shutdown At Imperial Oil

Darker than normal emissions from Imperial Oil's Sarnia manufacturing Monday are possible.

In an audio message recorded on the Community Awareness and Emergency Response Line, spokesperson Kristina Zimmer says there was an unplanned shutdown of the main boiler Monday morning.

"As a result, the emissions from the boiler stack may be darker than normal," says Zimmer. "Refinery staff are working to return the boiler to normal operations as soon as possible and steps are being taken to minimize emissions."

A plume of black smoke was noticeable for a short time at around 9am Monday morning.

Zimmer says Imperial Oil does not expect the emissions to exceed government guidelines.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has been notified.

Increased flaring may also be noticeable at the Shell Corunna and Sarnia Suncor refineries, as units are brought back online following planned maintenance.
