Procedure Changes Proposed In Petrolia

The Town of Petrolia wants to implement more structured procedural rules for those wishing to speak at council meetings.

Proposed changes include making delegations register with the clerk by noon on the Tuesday before a meeting, and limiting presentations to ten minutes.

It would also require the public to avoid topics including tender requests, labour relations, legal issues, insurance claims and contract negotiations.

Mayor John McCharles says the goal isn't to muzzle the public from speaking, but to eliminate unruly behavior.

He stresses that there will still be a chance for residents to ask a question from the floor about a specific agenda item at the start of each meeting.

Councillors will go through an education session on the topic, which will again be discussed at the next meeting on March 26.
