The City of Sarnia wants public input on proposed bike lanes to make it easier for cyclists to get around.
The plan calls for Colborne Rd. to be reduced to three lanes, with a bike lane going from Lakeshore Rd. to Capel St. in both directions.
The city also wants a portion of Cathcart Blvd. equipped with a bike lane to get to Canatara Park, and an undetermined route south of Exmouth St.
Manager of Transportation and Planning David Jackson believes they've picked convenient routes.
"One of the reasons why we selected this route is because the parking is already significantly restricted, for most of that stretch you can't park from Monday to Saturday 7am until 7pm," says Jackson. "So, removing on-street parking is often one of the most controversial parts of implementing bike lanes. But, we're optimistic here that where the parking is already restricted that it will be received more positively."
The improvements are being made possible, in part, by a $590,000 grant from the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program.
If the plans are approved, bike lanes could be added as early as this summer.
There's a drop-in public meeting on the matter on March 27 at 6:30pm at King George VI school.
