It wasn't a cat stuck in a tree, but Sarnia Fire and Rescue did help save a kitten from a sewer pipe Thursday.

Public Education Officer Mike Otis says the Engine 1 crew from the East St. firehall was called to Marshall Gowland Manor after someone heard the kitten in distress from the courtyard.

"We had to get firefighters in position on each end of the sewer pipe and we used a hose to coax the cat out," says Otis.

He says the cat was breathing and meowing when it emerged and was taken by the Sarnia and District Humane Society to be assessed by a veterinarian.

Otis says they've since received word that it has perked up even more and seems to be doing fine with all nine lives intact.
