Mother Nature Takes A Toll On Crops

It's been a bad year for Lambton County soybean growers.

Lambton Grains Committee Chair Kevin Marriott says it was a very wet spring with heavy rains in June, followed by record hot temperatures recently, which really took their toll.

"Beans went in in fairly poor conditions," says Marriott. "We had heavy rains after that with rain ponding in June. That was followed by absolutely no rain in August and record heat in September. That means yields will be below average this year."

Marriott says corn actually benefited from the heat because it was behind in maturity, although lower yields are also expected.

Farming is Sarnia Lambton's third largest industry.
