Tragic July Fourth On St. Clair River

Port Huron Police are investigating a drowning in the St. Clair River.

First responders were called about a missing swimmer around 5:50pm on Tuesday in the area of the Thomas Edison Parkway, north of the Beacon turnout.

Witnesses told police the swimmer was overcome by waves created by boat traffic.

Port Huron police and fire as well as the US Coast Guard, Border Patrol, the St. Clair County Dive Team and EMS responded.

The swimmer, identified as 38-year-old Kenneth James Johnson of Port Huron, was located in about 30 ft of water. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say the results of an autopsy and toxicology testing are pending.

Port Huron police say the tragedy is an unfortunate reminder of the dangers associated with swimming in the St. Clair River.
