Sarnia's Valley Axe is coming off an outstanding showing at the World Championships in Pembroke over the weekend. The club won five major titles and set three new competitive records. Owner Bo Tait won the pro tomahawk gold cup division, while Travis Kelly captured the amateur tomahawk conventional title with a record 166 points and was the first person to throw a perfect round. Brett Dewhirst placed first in amateur knife gold cup, and conventional (with a record 217 points), and Jerry Gruszecki won the amateur tomahawk gold cup division. Tait says the success speaks to the quality of the club. "We've worked really, really hard to build a core group of really avid and enthusiastic throwers," says Tait. "We've got a separate members' room where they can come in anytime and throw when they need to. We stay competitive, that's really important. We're constantly competing against guys that are throwing several hours a week and a lot of other competitors don't have that." In addition to the indoor facility on London Line, Valley Axe now has six outdoor ranges in operation. Tait says they're now focused on preparing for a competition on Ithica, NY at the end of August, and hope to host an event soon.
