Fire Call Reveals Carbon Monoxide Threat

A small exterior fire at a Hanna Cres. home Wednesday afternoon led to the discovery of a potentially life-threatening condition.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services spokesman Mike Otis says firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze, but their routine follow-up check of air quality in the home found elevated levels of carbon monoxide.

He says the source was a faulty appliance.

"Carbon monoxide alarms are required adjacent to every sleeping area, so you need them outside your bedrooms," says Otis. "That is the law, just as smoke alarms are required on every level of your home and adjacent to every sleeping area."

Otis says Union Gas was called to look into the faulty appliance.
