Bailey Calls For Amendment To Assisted Dying Bill

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey is calling on the Liberal government to make an amendment to its Medical Assistance in Dying Statute Law Amendment Act.

He wants doctors and other health care providers' rights to be protected in the act if they choose not to be a participant in an assisted death on conscientious grounds.

"I have received over 400 letters on this, and that doesn't even include the emails and phone calls," Bailey says. "Individuals, church groups and health care professionals are voicing their concern. The want to see a conscientious amendment included for people who, in good conscience, can't go through with the assisted dying part of that."

He's written to Health Minister Hoskins, asking for the amendment.

Bill 84 is now being studied by the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs after passing second reading.
