Ratepayer Cries Foul Over Request For Information

An outspoken Sarnia ratepayer is up in arms after submitting a letter to city council, asking for information on how much the city has paid over the past year in contractor, consultant and lawyer fees.

Margaret Bird, who has previously tangled with administration, says she was told by the Sarnia city clerk's office that she would have to pay for the time and costs incurred by each department to come up with the figures, and she would have to apply through the Freedom of Information Act.

'They're not being transparent," she says. "They're spending millions on all these fees and commissions when we have a desperate need for more pressing items. They will not disclose what they are spending to protect their backsides. And now they want to charge us to give us information about how they are spending our money?"

Bird says she will not pursue the matter as she's not going to pay for anything.
