The City of Sarnia has paid $2.58-million in WSIB claims so far this year.
Director of Finance Lisa Armstrong says payouts were made to two firefighters and their families as a result of retroactive presumptive disease claims.
"The WSIB presumptive legislation is a phase-in of various workplace items where workers or their survivors can refile previously denied claims for things like cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer and most recently [post traumatic stress disorder]," says Armstrong.
She says the city pays the full cost of any accident and sickness claims filed by their workers as they occur.
Armstrong says some retroactive claims are paid in lump sums while others include an ongoing survivor benefit.
The City of Sarnia has budgeted $1.4-million for WSIB claims in 2017.
