Council Briefs

Lambton's medical officer of health will be revisiting the fluoride debate again.

Sarnia council decided to send Dr. Sudit Ranade the presentation made Monday by Rod Gowrie on the discontinuation of fluoride in our drinking water.

Council wants Dr. Ranade to look for discrepancies in the report.

Sarnia council went on the record in 2013 supporting its removal from our drinking water.

But, the 5-4 recorded vote didn't change the outcome, because legally four out of the six Lambton Area Water Supply System member municipalities had to vote against fluoridation to have it removed and other municipalities didn't agree, so it remained.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley says he will serve notice of motion that the question be put on the ballot.

Bradley says the public decided to put fluoride into the water, so they should decide if its taken out.

Sarnia council has endorsed a request to dedicate Lake Chipican Dr. in Canatara Park as a public highway.

Sarnia police have been laying Highway Traffic Act charges against careless drivers within the boundaries of Canatara Park for years.

However, careless driving charges recently laid against two individuals with withdrawn in court because the Justice of the Peace agreed there was ambiguity with respect to the parking lots being defined as a “highway” under the act.

The court prosecutor requested that the City of Sarnia establish and dedicate the parking lots within Canatara Park as public highways in order to uphold future convictions in court.

The city’s prosecutor, Sarnia police and the development manager of engineering were consulted.

An agreement with the Village of Pt. Edward for the maintenance of streets and traffic signals on roads bordering the two municipalities will be renewed.

The last time it was done was in 1991.

Maintenance authorities from both municipalities recommend the agreement be updated to reflect the current regulated maintenance responsibilities, as well as, each municipalities responsibility for maintaining streets in the others jurisdiction.

Sarnia council has repealed a by-law to permit a craft brewery at 153 Christina St. South.

The applicant, Refined Fool Brewing Company, contacted city staff October 13 and asked that the planning applications be withdrawn.

The downtown craft brewery received a glowing endorsement for expansion from council in September when the rezoning was approved.

Co-owner Nathan Colquhoun said at the time they were committed to revitalizing Sarnia’s downtown and providing jobs and had spent $26,000 to make sure all community needs were met in their 202 page application.

According to city staff, the buildings owner and applicant couldn't come to an agreement on the use of the building.

A bravery award will be established to honour those who go above and beyond.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley proposed the idea after two men helped save the life of a man and his dog whose boat capsized in Lake Huron near Riding Club Lane in early September.

The award will be modeled on one similar in London, decided upon by emergency officials with the individuals recognized in a plaque presentation at City Hall.

Sarnia council carried a motion from Councillor Cindy Scholten, asking staff to prepare a report describing the advantages and disadvantages of the current Transit area for taxation revenue to support conventional Transit Service.

A financial analysis to levy all properties in Sarnia to support the service will also be done.

Closed door in-camera meeting will now be recorded at Sarnia city hall.

City council has endorsed a motion from Mayor Mike Bradley asking staff to develop the policies and procedures needed to implement the audio recording of closed door in-camera meetings as soon as possible.

Three years ago the former Ombudsman recommended that all Ontario municipalities record all meetings, open or closed.

Mayor Bradley says it’s now becoming a common practice and urged Sarnia council to do the same by the end of the year.
