New Regulations For Shipping Containers Recommended

Sarnia Council is being asked to approve rezoning bylaw amendments proposed regarding the use of shipping containers in the city.

A new definition for 'shipping container' and new regulations for temporary and permanent use of the large prefabricated metal boxes would be added to the rezoning application.

Councillor Bev MacDougall says concerns were raised about improper storage and use of the containers.

"Staff at city hall tried to address appropriate setbacks, appropriate locations for them relative to residences in residential areas and then how and where they can be used in our light or heavy industrial areas," says MacDougall.

Residents will only be able to store items in residential shipping containers for a maximum 60 days per calendar year.

Stacking them would be banned and only two containers would be allowed per property.

A public meeting is planned at the beginning of council's regular agenda at 4pm.
