Update: World Suicide Prevention Month Of Hope

World Suicide Prevention Day was observed Saturday, September 10.

The Sarnia-Lambton Suicide Prevention Committee hosted an event at 11am near Guest Services at Lambton Mall.

Coordinator Ellan Dickieson says it's part of the Month of Hope Campaign.

"Suicide does not discriminate against age, race or gender," she says. "It can happen to anyone. We know it's the number two cause of death among youth, but it's also prevalent among middle aged men and seniors."

A new report from Kids Help Phone shows one in five Canadian teenagers have seriously considered suicide in the past 12 months.

The survey of 1,300 teens between the age of 13 and 18 also found that 47% did not speak to anyone about suicide. 46% had formulated a plan and those contemplating suicide were twice as likely to be girls as boys.

Dickieson says anyone in distress can call 1-888-DISTRES or the Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 or go to the Emergency Department at Bluewater Health.
