Float Down Forces Shipping Traffic Restricitions

Shipping traffic will be halted on the St. Clair River from 12pm until 8pm on Sunday from the Blue Water Bridge to Stag Island.

Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue On-Scene Commander Mike Brown says the ban is in place because of the annual unsanctioned Port Huron float down.

"Freighters, pleasure craft and and personal water craft will all be restricted from entering the exclusion zone," he says. "The Canadian Coast Guard's responsibility is to respond to persons in distress. We work with our partner agency, Canadian Border Services, because there are security issues with people crossing the river. They will be picked up and taken to shore."

Last year, over 5,000 people went into the water on various floatation devices at Lighthouse Park in Port Huron, leading to what Brown called a "very busy day" for both the American and Canadian coast guards, and police vessels.
