Point Edward Fire Urges "River Run" Caution

Point Edward Fire and Rescue is stressing the importance of staying safe while doing so called "river runs" in the St. Clair River.

Firefighters have been busy recently with calls to the area of the Blue Water Bridge, including rescuing a person from the strong current Friday.

Chief Doug MacKenzie says many safety precautions need to be taken in the river.

"Stay near the shore, and don't be swimming so far out," says MacKenzie. "A lot of the boats out in the lake can't see you. We did see a lot of people using personal floatation devices which is great to see. It's not a good idea to swim at night. There are boats going up the river all the time and they don't have headlights."

MacKenzie says if you're jumping in the river at the base of the bridge, make sure you look before jumping.

He's also discouraging people from running along the rocks at the waterfront.

Anyone who notices a swimmer is distress should call 911 as soon as possible.
