Police Budget In The Red

The Sarnia Police Service budget is in the red for the first quarter of the year.

As of April 2016, Chief Phil Nelson says they are over by $17,784.

Nelson says a large portion of that is due to overtime.

"Throughout the different parts of the budget we have, we're under in some areas, but what really put a dent into our budget year to date is the fact that we've had two homicides," says Nelson.

"Homicide investigations are very intensive and require a lot of leg work, a lot of work and unfortunately you do get into overtime with these major investigations."

In 2015, Nelson says the overtime pay was over by more than $100,000 mostly due to officers getting injured.

There are 111 officers with the Sarnia Police Service.
