Firefighters Extinguish Grass Fire

The warmest day of April so far saw city firefighters respond to a sizeable field fire in northeast Sarnia.

Smoke was very visible for a time in the area of the Howard Watson Nature trail north of Hwy. 402.

Platoon Chief Bill Sheane says conditions were very dry upon arrival and the fire was spreading fast.

He says it took two trucks with hoses and eight firefighters with water on the ground to put out the blaze.

"It was pretty well from the old tracks, 3/4 of the way across to the new houses," says Sheane.

"We stopped it about 25' from the fence along the businesses along Michigan Ave. It was a good sized, substantial fire."

Sheane says the cause hasn't been determined but crews are not investigating.

He reminds everyone to be very careful this time of year. Grass in the area is extremely dry and can easily catch fire.
