The City of Sarnia and the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership are working on a strategy to better sell the city as a retirement community and to better serve an aging population.
City Accessibility Coordinator Dale Mosley says they're going to develop an Age Friendly Community Plan with Lambton College's Office of Applied Research and Innovation taking the lead in research, eliminating costly consultant's fees.
"We have an aging population that is five years older than the provincial and national average," he says. "As our population ages, we need to have a strategy in place to ensure they're doing so in an active, engaged and healthy way."
The survey will be released to the public in late March. A community summit will be held in November and the action plan will be released to Sarnia Council and the public in January 2017.
It will include eight essential elements of an age friendly community, including housing, transportation, community support and health services.
