Lambton County Targets Homelessness

The county of Lambton is launching four pilot projects in an effort to combat homelessness and increase mental health supports.

Lambton Warden Bev MacDougall says the first project deals with seniors homelessness.

"It is going to provide subsidy for 20 beds in the community for vulnerable seniors, who need an alternate level of care who are plugging up some of the acute care beds in our hospital," says MacDougall.

"We have set aside $205,000 for that pilot."

$215,000 has also been set aside for vehicle purchases for vulnerable residents in rural Lambton.

$225,000 has been earmarked for the community service navagator program, and $400,000 will help get people out of shelters and into permanent housing in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, and River City Vineyard.

Over 100 local CMHA clients currently get permanent housing support.

A total of $1.1-million has been set aside by the province for the next two years.
