Winter's Abrupt Return Makes Driving Difficult

A sudden change in weather Sunday caused poor driving conditions across southwestern Ontario.

Western Region OPP were reporting numerous collisions and vehicles in the ditch.

After a balmy Saturday that saw the temperature rise to 9 C (48 F) at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport, winds shifted northwesterly and the temperature plummeted Sunday.

The mercury at the airport had dropped 9 C by mid afternoon from 5am when it was still 6 C and a north-northwest wind gust of 67 km/h was recorded at 10am.

The strong winds, dropping temperature and light snow caused poor visibility and very slippery roads across the district.

It will be a blustery, cold start to the second week of January with a high of -8 C (18 F) Monday.
