Fifth Anniversary Of Hwy. 402 Blizzard

Temperatures were at record highs on Sunday in sharp contrast to an extreme weather event five years ago in Sarnia-Lambton.

What would be described as the worst winter storm since the 1970's, hit December 13, 2010, paralyzing Hwy. 402 and stranding hundreds of motorists.

A state of emergency was declared to mobilize military help to rescue people stuck out on the highway in blinding blizzard conditions and dangerous wind chills.

Some motorists were picked up by helicopters and flown to warming stations that had been set up.

It would take the better part of a week to remove hundreds of trucks and cars and clear huge snow drifts that made the 402 and other roads across the district impassable.
