Charity Golf Event Goes To New Heights

Local organizers are putting a unique spin on the traditional charity golf tournament.

This weekend's first annual Chopper Drop at Sarnia Golf and Curling Club features two golf ball drops on Saturday qualifying winners for $10,000 each.

A helicopter will drop 3,000 golf balls with the winner having the ball closest to the pin. A second drop will see up to 15 golfers qualify for a closest-to-the hole competition from the 85-yard mark on the 18th hole.

Event co-chair Sue Baert says they wanted their event to be unique.

"There's so many golf tournaments out there competing for charity dollars these days," says Baert. "You have to be unique and offer something no one else does and that's why we chose to do this."

The two day event gets underway Friday night with a gala celebration on the 14th floor at First Sarnia Place.

The charity golf tournament gets underway Saturday featuring sports celebrities including former NHLers Rick Vaive, Dennis Maruk, and Leafs broadcaster Joe Bowen.

All proceeds go towards the Chris Dawson Foundation and Sarnia Prostate Clinic.
