Council Supports Steelworkers Campaign

Sarnia City Council has voted in favor of supporting United Steelworkers in their campaign to better enforce the Westray amendments.

The amendment passed in 2004 was introduced following the death of 26 miners in Nova Scotia.

United Steelworkers Local 14-09-7 spokesman Mark Heinle says over the last nine years, it has only been utilized in ten cases.

He says the United Steelworkers want to see criminal liability imposed on corporations for serious workplace injuries and fatalities.

Between 1993 and 2011, there were a total of 17-thousand workplace deaths in Canada, an average of 900 every year.

All city councillors voted in favour to support the campaign.
