Proposed Microbeads Ban Gaining Support

The Lake Huron Centre For Coastal Conservation is joining a call to ban the use of microbeads in Ontario.

The small plastic pieces, which are used in cosmetics and soaps have been making their way to the Great Lakes and are polluting the water.

Although Lake Huron isn't in as bad of shape as Lake Erie, Coastal Resources Manager Jeff Peach says the microbeads are a growing concern and are harmful to fish.

Ottawa Liberal MPP Marie-France Lalonde introduced the legislation which passed second reading a few weeks ago.

If the bill passes, Ontario would become the first province in Canada to ban the use of microbeads.
