Threat Of Legal Action Over Sarnia General Hospital

Sarnia's mayor is hoping the city can avoid legal action by convincing Bluewater Health the Sarnia General Hospital Site is its responsibility.

The hospital board notified council October 30 that no money will be spent on maintenance and security of the Mitton St. site after this year because it contends the city owns the land and buildings.

Mayor Mike Bradley says it's disappointing.

City Council meets in special session Monday morning to discuss the matter.

Bradley says council is being asked to authorize a meeting between senior staff from both organizations to see if there's a solution.

If Bluewater Health abandons the Mitton St. property December 31, the mayor says the city will be obliged to bring legal action, including a motion seeking an injunction if necessary.

Around $1-million has been spent maintaining and securing the site since its closure in late 2011.
