The newest Intercounty Baseball League team said they chose a bear to represent the team as an homage to Fergie Jenkins, who spent most of his career playing for the Chicago Cubs, he represented the club at All-Star games three times.

The Chatham native had a number of incredible accomplishments over his baseball career, he was the first Canadian and Cubs pitcher to win a Cy Young Award and was the first Canadian ever elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He's one of four pitchers to record more than 3,000 strikeouts with less than 1,000 walks. He also had six consecutive seasons as a 20-game winner, while wearing a Cubs uniform.

A fitting role model for the Barnstormers' mascot.

Lefty wears the number 24 on his jersey to symbolize the team's inaugural season.

The Barnstormers will hit the road for their first-ever game on Friday, May 18, 2024. But Lefty and the rest of the team will entertain the home crowd the very next night, playing their first home game, at Fergie Jenkins Field, against the Kitchener Panthers.
