The Walkerton Clean Water Legacy Award has been handed out by the Municipality of Brockton for this year.
The municipality announced that Katelynn Lavergne, who’s studying environmental sciences at the University of Guelph, is this year's winner. The Owen Sound resident was awarded $1,500 to help support the cost of her tuition.
The award was created in 2020 to honour those who lost their lives in 2000 during the Walkerton water tragedy. It is awarded to local Grey and Bruce students entering the field of environmental studies or clean water management.
“I am truly honoured and grateful to be chosen for this year's Clean Water Legacy Award. This award aligns with my passion for sustainability and protecting our Earth's natural resources,” Katelynn said at a small ceremony at the Walkerton Heritage Water Garden on July 27.
Her goal is to pursue a career in resource management and policy, working to protect natural resources in Ontario.
