Thousands in southeast London lose power due to crash

Thousands of customers in southeast London lost power early Sunday afternoon after a pick-up truck collided with a hydro pole.

At 12:50 p.m., London Hydro reported an outage affecting upwards of 3,000 residences and businesses in neighbourhoods in White Oaks, Westminster and parts of Wilton Grove.

At approximately the same time the service outage occurred, reports of a crash in the area of Bessemer Road and Newbold Street were made on social media. One image showed a black pick-up truck that had come off the road, and crashed into a hydro pole, resulting in significant damage to the structure.

The cause of the crash and possible injuries are unknown.

As of 2 p.m. Sunday, London Hydro estimates that service will be restored to the area by 8:30 p.m.

By 3 p.m., most areas had their power back, while a small group of customers in White Oaks and Wilton Grove remained in the dark. London Hydro updated its estimated service restoration time for those customer to 3:30 p.m.
