Decontamination demonstration at CKHA's Chatham site

Don't be surprised -- or alarmed -- if you see some police and fire crews at the hospital in Chatham for a couple of hours Tuesday morning.

A demonstration is set to take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the ambulance bay outside Chatham-Kent Health Alliance's Emergency Department in Chatham.

Hospital officials said Harold Marcus Limited will be leading the demonstration of its decontamination chamber, with members of Chatham-Kent EMS, local police, and members of the local Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services all expected to attend.

"This demonstration event will educate staff, physicians, volunteers, police, fire and emergency service workers on the process of patient decontamination in the event of large scale exposure of chemical, bio-hazard, radioactive and nuclear (CBRN) materials in the community," said a release from the CKHA, adding that people attending the Emergency Department and visitors to the hospital will not be affected.

Last year, the hospital held a mock Code Orange emergency preparedness exercise.
