Fire engulfs barn in Chatham

Fire crews resorted to chopping down trees in order to get their trucks close a massive barn fire in the outskirts of Chatham Monday night.

Firefighters were called to 24439 Prince Albert Road shortly before 10 p.m. after the empty barn burst into flame. Fire trucks were forced to back up as close as possible to the fire and emptied water into big holding pools with around 20 firefighters at the scene running hoses from the pools to the barn.

According to one of the property owners, who asked not to be named, tenants rent a residential building on the property, but they were clear of any danger.  No injuries have been reported.

“Everyone is safe and that’s what matters,” said the property owner.

Owners believe heat trapped in old straw may have started the blaze, however, fire officials have not released the official cause of the fire.

A damage estimate has not been released yet, either.
