From the rink to the golf course the past year has been a highlight for Garrett Rank of Elmira. The 2014 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Champion will cap it off by representing his country this summer.
On Sunday, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Golf Canada announced that Rank and three other golfers have have been nominated to represent Canada at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Canada's women's team is made up of Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls and Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, PEI. Austin Connelly, who currently lives in Texas, joins Rank on the men's team. The competition runs July 16-19 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham.
Rank has much more excitement on the horizon, winning the Canadian Men's Mid-Amateur qualifies him for the 2015 Canadian Open. He is looking forward to the busy season on the golf course.
“I am honoured and extremely excited to be playing for Canada again." He said in a press release. "I am excited about the quality of schedule I have this year with the Pan Am Games and RBC Canadian Open as well as the other great championships I’ll be competing in this summer.”
Off the course has been just as busy for the 27-year-old. Rank is also a professional hockey referee and made his NHL debut back in January in a tilt between Buffalo and Minnesota. He called a number of junior games before ‘turning pro’, including the 2014 Memorial Cup in London.
Rank's upcoming competition will be historic for golf in Canada and around the world. It is the sport's first time being part of the Pan Am Games and will also be making its return to the Olympics in 2016.
