October sees unemployment rate tick up in midwestern Ontario

The unemployment rate in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region saw a slight rise in October.

The latest jobs numbers from the Four County Labour Market Planning Board show that the province currently has a 7.2 per cent unemployment rate, while this region's unemployment rate went up 0.2 percentage points to land at 3.8 per cent. That remains the second lowest in all of Ontario. Both rates are unadjusted for seasonality.

However, despite that low number, October did see a notable decline in employment and labour force participation in the area.

The number of people not in the labour force in the region increased by 3,200. This in turn reduced the region’s participation rate by 1 percentage points down to 56.4 per cent.

The goods-producing sector lost 2,800 jobs, with construction seeing the highest percentage loss of jobs at 11.2 per cent. That represented a loss of 1,800.

Current job posting numbers for the Bruce, Grey, Huron, Perth region exceeds 1,300. Details can be found at www.connect2JOBS.ca.
