One person was seriously hurt in a weekend crash involving a horse-drawn carriage in the Township of Southgate.
Emergency crews were called to Grey Road 23 between Southgate Road 22 and Grey Road 9 shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday where a pickup truck collided with the horse and buggy.
The person operating the carriage was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The horse was not hurt.
The pickup driver, a 59-year-old Holstein resident, is charged with careless driving causing bodily harm.
The collision kept the stretch of Grey Road 23 closed for roughly five hours. It was reopened around 3:30 p.m.
In the wake of the crash, Grey Bruce OPP are reminding that rural roads are shared by a variety of users, including horse-drawn vehicles, cyclists, agricultural equipment, and pedestrians.
"Drivers are encouraged to remain attentive, watch for slower-moving traffic, maintain a safe following distance, and exercise patience when encountering non-motorized vehicles," police said in a statement issued Monday morning. "Taking a few extra moments to safely share the road can help prevent collisions and ensure everyone reaches their destination safely."
