Local students from Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) have painted new crosswalks for Veteran's Week in Clinton.
The project was spearheaded by Community Improvement Coordinator Angela Smith, who says she received input from a resident to request that Clinton get the crosswalks that have become popular in other communities. Then the legion reached out, and council approved the go-ahead for the project, which was so well supported there will be more than one.
"Actually we're doing two of them. One is at the cenotaph here in town and the other is at the intersection by the Legion," Smith explained.
Smith says it's very special having students create something lasting for the community to remember and honour veterans. She also notes that two construction classes at CHSS made the templates for the crosswalks. Now, when the crosswalks need to be repainted, they'll have the templates ready to go thanks to the great work done by the CHSS helpers.

With the focus of the project being the remembrance and honouring of veterans, Smith adds that the educational aspect of this project is important, too. She says we should remember the sacrifice of our veterans every day, not just during Veteran's Week and Remembrance Day. She says while work was being done, there were young people stopping to ask about the project.
"There were some young folks walking home from school, maybe 10-12 years old, who stopped and took the time to read what we had written and asked some questions, and then they carried on their way. I thought 'We've already been successful' because there's a little educational component there, too," she said proudly.
