Wellington County OPP warn motorcyclists of fall hazards

Wellington County OPP are reminding motorists and motorcyclists alike to stay alert as changing autumn weather introduces unique safety hazards to local roads.

Police advised that cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and unpredictable road conditions require all drivers to adjust their habits this time of year.

"Watch for fallen leaves. Wet leaves can be as slippery as ice," explained Constable Kyle Fozard. "They may conceal potholes, road debris, lane markings or uneven pavement. Reduce your speed and avoid sudden braking or steering inputs when riding through leaf-covered areas."

Shorter daylight hours present another risk, reducing overall visibility on the roads.

"Shorter daylight hours and changing weather conditions can make it harder for motorists to see motorcycles," added Fozard. "Wear high-visibility gear, make sure all lights are functioning properly and avoid remaining in vehicle blind spots."

Wildlife is another hazard to watch for on the roads this autumn, especially deer.

"Fall is a period of heightened deer activity, particularly during dawn and dusk hours," he warned. "Deer can enter roadways unexpectedly and create dangerous situations for motorcyclists. If you observe one deer near the road, be prepared for additional animals to follow."

Motorcyclists should also understand when to end their riding season and regularly discuss weather and road conditions before heading out.

Dropping temperatures can also cause rapid changes in tire pressure, reducing traction when riders need it most. Motorcyclists routinely inspect tire tread, brakes, lights, and fluid levels before heading out.

Fozard said taking an extra moment for vehicle maintenance, slowing down, and staying vigilant can make all the difference in preventing fall collisions.
