Huron County OPP have reported the resolution of an investigation in downtown Wingham on Friday evening.
Police originally reported that a box containing several items was dropped off at the Salvation Army on Friday afternoon. An employee identified one of the items as being of concern and contacted police.
Police and North Huron Fire were on scene for several hours, and as a precaution, Josephine Street between Victoria Street and John Street was closed.
The OPP reported at about 7:30 p.m. that the matter was resolved.
"The Huron County OPP would like to thank residents, businesses, and motorists for their patience and cooperation while emergency responders worked to ensure public safety," read a statement from police. "There is no ongoing threat to public safety, and normal activities in the area have resumed."
A temporary shelter was set up at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre for any residents unable to return to their residences. The shelter is no longer needed and has been closed.
