Grey County municipalities are taking a closer look at whether garbage and waste-management services could be delivered more collaboratively across the region.
The issue is being examined through Grey County's Joint Municipal Services Committee, which brings together representatives from the county's nine member municipalities.
County officials say a waste-management services study is now underway to compare the different systems currently being used across Grey County and identify opportunities for municipalities to work together.
Grey County says the study will "examine current services across the nine member municipalities" as part of a broader review of how waste is handled across the region.
The work comes as the county and its lower-tier municipalities look for services that could potentially be coordinated or shared rather than managed independently by each municipality.
The Joint Municipal Services Committee was established to examine those types of opportunities, with waste management emerging as one of the areas selected for further study.
Grey County says the review will also "explore opportunities to better align waste management with Grey County's climate action goals."
The review could ultimately examine differences in areas such as waste collection, disposal and other municipal waste-management practices, although no decision has been made to establish a single county-wide system.
The county says a draft final study and recommendations are expected before the end of 2026. Those recommendations would then go to Grey County Council and the participating municipal councils for consideration in 2027.
