A new waste transfer and processing facility capable of receiving more than 31,000 tonnes of material per year is being proposed along Highway 21 in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh.
A numbered company, 511414 Ontario Limited, has applied to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for an Environmental Compliance Approval to operate the facility at 86618 Highway 21.
According to a posting on the Environmental Registry of Ontario, the proposed facility would be located on a 1.25-hectare property and would handle what the province describes as "solid non-hazardous waste."
The site would be allowed to receive a maximum of 31,200 tonnes of waste and processed material annually if the application is approved.
As much as 424 tonnes could be stored at the property at one time while awaiting removal.
The province says the proposed facility could accept material originating anywhere in Ontario.
"Processing and management of the waste will occur indoors," the Environmental Registry posting says.
Some scrap metal and wood waste bins would be permitted outside.
The facility is proposed to operate for shipping and receiving between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
The application was posted to the Environmental Registry on July 15 and underwent a 45-day public consultation period, which ended August 29.
The Environmental Registry continues to list the application at the proposal stage, meaning the province has not yet posted a decision on whether the Environmental Compliance Approval will be issued.
The proponent is listed as 511414 Ontario Limited, with an address at 100 Lake Range Drive in Kincardine.
The application does not provide a detailed public breakdown of the types of waste expected to be processed at the site, the anticipated number of truck movements, or when operations could begin if approval is granted.
The proposal is being considered under Ontario's Environmental Protection Act.
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is responsible for reviewing the application and determining whether an Environmental Compliance Approval should be issued.
