Buoys to be placed in Stratford's Lake Victoria to improve water quality

Two small yellow buoys will soon be seen bobbing up and down in Stratford's Lake Victoria.

Starting Monday, the city will test the new innovative devices in an effort to improve the quality of the lake's water. One buoy will be placed in the water just east of Tom Patterson Island, and the other will be located west of the Waterloo Street bridge.

"These buoys, known as Equilibrium Modulating Fluids Devices, are designed to help improve water quality by enhancing the natural exchange of gases between the water and the atmosphere," the city said in a statement. "This helps support healthier oxygen conditions in the water and creates an environment that can help reduce issues such as odour and the buildup of organic material."

The buoys, designed by an Ottawa-based company, are solar-powered and do not add any chemicals or substances to the water.

They are being tested on a trial basis with no cost to the city.

The buoys will remain in the water until the end of October.
