The Town of Saugeen Shores has officially broken ground on a new affordable housing development in partnership with Wilson Developments and Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce.
The project, located on Concession 10 in Port Elgin, will feature 28 below-market homes designed to serve low-to moderate-income households in a location close to essential services and future community infrastructure.
According to the Town, 21 units will be sold by Wilson Developments at below-market pricing, five units will be transferred to Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce to be sold through its attainable and affordable homeownership program, and two units will be transferred to the Town to support ongoing efforts to increase affordable housing supply.
“This project reflects Council’s continued commitment to affordable housing for residents of Saugeen Shores,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “By working together with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce and Wilson Developments, we are creating new opportunities for individuals and families to put down roots in our community. Through these strong partnerships, we are taking meaningful action to ensure Saugeen Shores remains a place where everyone can find a place to call home.”
The Town said the development is part of its ongoing efforts to diversify the local housing supply while supporting the needs of the growing community, a key pillar of its Strategic Plan. It also said it continues to advocate for affordable and attainable housing by reducing barriers to development, establishing incentive frameworks, fostering partnerships and creating a variety of housing initiatives.
“Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is thrilled to be partnering with the Town of Saugeen Shores and Wilson Developments to provide attainable and affordable housing in Port Elgin,” said Greg Fryer, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce. “It is only through partnerships like this, with the support of our donors and all those who stand with us, can the challenge of housing affordability be overcome. Our hope is that this model will be replicated not only throughout Grey and Bruce and but across Ontario.”
Wilson Developments President Brad Wilson said the company is proud to be involved in the initiative.
“Wilson Developments is proud to partner with the Town of Saugeen Shores and Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce on a project that will create more entry-level homeownership opportunities for local families,” said Wilson. “This development features thoughtfully designed stacked townhomes located just minutes from the Lake Huron shoreline. The community will also include a dedicated pickleball court and convenient access to parks, trails, schools, shopping, and other everyday amenities, creating a welcoming neighbourhood for residents of all ages. We believe increasing the supply of quality entry-level housing is an important step toward addressing the housing needs of our region. By working together with our community partners, we are demonstrating that meaningful collaboration can deliver lasting benefits for current and future residents. We are excited to be part of a project that will provide more individuals with the opportunity to own a home in one of Ontario’s most desirable waterfront communities.”
The Town said pre-sales for select below-market units are now underway. Eligible homebuyers are encouraged to explore the opportunity to enter the housing market through a program designed to support affordable homeownership and long-term housing stability.
