The aftermath of a dramatic ice rescue on Georgian Bay is now making its way to council chambers in Owen Sound.
Deputy Mayor Scott Greig has introduced a notice of motion following the March 8, 2026 incident that saw 23 people rescued from drifting ice near the city.
"I hereby give notice...whereas on March 8, Owen Sound fire services responded to a rescue on Georgian Bay," Greig told council Monday night. "I will ask council to ask staff to prepare a report on the cost borne by the city and prepare to issue proportion of the invoicing."
He says the request for the report will be part of a motion at the April 13 meeting.
The rescue drew a large-scale emergency response after a group of ice fishers became stranded on a sheet of ice that broke away from shore near Balmy Beach and drifted kilometres out into the bay.
Multiple agencies were involved, including police, fire departments, paramedics and aviation units. Helicopters were used to airlift all 23 people to safety, with several treated for minor injuries and hypothermia.
Greig’s upcoming motion is expected to focus on how those emergency response costs were handled, and whether a portion could be recovered.
